It is six years since the survivors from Petaluma established a haven in the Russian River Valley thirty miles to the north. During a hunt in the low mountain wilderness of the Redwood Empire, Raven, and Emmie, with Satan, encounter Sherri, a young woman carrying an infant and trying to flee with her four-year-old daughter from a pair of assassins. She is already pierced by two arrows, with more coming. In fending off the archers plus kryls on a capture mission, Satan is seriously wounded, so he and Sherri are both unable to walk. In the rescue and while getting them to the village for treatment, Emmie and Raven both display powers that Sherri and their captured assassin believe come only from the devil, as taught by Ned Morgan, their old nemesis from Petaluma, who is still obsessed with what he perceives as a sacred crusade to rid Earth of evil. Not only did he survive the battle of Petaluma but he has established a new reign of terror.
