Lyster was a Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers and was sent to China to assist in the defense of the city of Tientsin during the Boxer Rebellion. The letters provide a firsthand account of the rebellion and Lyster's experiences during his time in China. The book also includes a brief biography of Lyster and an introduction by his sister.
