Publisher's Synopsis
Each child is an individual. There are varied reasons for why a child may struggle with sounds and letters. Winning Solutions for Struggling Readers and Spellers includes step by step directions for studying your child's reading and spelling errors, so you know why they are not learning to read and spell.
You can take the worry out of teaching your child to read smoothly with few mistakes.
Watch your child's confidence grow as reading gets easier. With "Winning Solutions for Struggling Readers and Spellers" kids learn how sounds and letters work together to form words.
Discover exactly what your students need to learn. You will not waste time on what they already know. With the included assessments and step by step directions, you know what your student needs and which lessons to teach.
There are six different phonemic awareness skills children need to read and spell fluently and accurately. "Winning Solutions for Struggling Readers and Spellers" has assessments to locate which phonemic awareness skills your student needs to improve, and strategies to help you teach those skills. Each 20-minute lesson includes all six skills, but lessons are designed so you will only teach the skills they need.
Use your child's reading and spelling samples to choose from several scripted lessons.
Is blending sounds together a problem? Follow the script to teach them how.
Do they leave letters for sounds out of words? Do they only 'hear' some of the sounds in words? Follow the script to show them how to segment, insert and delete sounds in words.
Are the letters and sounds jumbled out of order when they read and write? Use the script for sequencing, inserting, and deleting sounds.
Do they confuse vowel sounds and letters? There are strategies to help them tell the differences between vowel sounds.
No matter what stage of reading your child has reached, there are wordlists to match your child's need. Whether they cannot read any words, or they are struggling to read and spell long words, you will find ideas, scripts, and word lists for your child's stage of reading.
When your child is missing phonemic awareness skills, phonic rules will not make sense. Lessons and strategies for teaching phonics are included. Start your child's lessons at THEIR level. Choose lists to match the sounds and syllable or word lengths they need. The book guides your journey - it does not dictate it.
The wordlists and routine build upon your child's strengths in bite sized increments.
