Publisher's Synopsis
I am a lover and have not found my thing to love. That is a big point if you know enough to realize what I mean. It makes my destruction inevitable, you see. There are few who understand that.
― Sherwood Anderson, Winesburg, Ohio
Winesburg, Ohio is a collection of interconnected short stories by Sherwood Anderson. The stories depict the lives of the inhabitants of a small town and are narrated by town reporter George Willard.
It starts with a prologue in which an old writer thinks about the "grotesques" people he knew in Winesburg. Some of the more famous stories from the collection are: "Hands," tells the story of Wing Biddlebaum, a recluse with uncontrollable hands who have fled the town after some false accusations, "Paper Pills" is about an aging doctor who marries one of his young patients, only to grieve her death six months later, and; "Mother " introduces the mother of George Willard and recounts the struggle between George's parents for influence over his life.
A series of stories portrays more of the town's most notable residents with themes like independence, alienation, grief, and fate - among many more.
