Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from William Morris: Poet, Artist, Socialist; A Selection From His Writings Together With a Sketch of the Man
In presenting the Dream of jean Ball to an Amer ican public it has been felt that it is hardly to be expected that the average reader will have any very exact knowledge of the conditions of daily life in England five hundred years ago. It may therefore be that there will be some things in the tale which will not be wholly clear without a few words of explanation. And so it has seemed best to incorporate in this introduction a slight Sketch of the economic circumstances which gave shape to the times in which John Ball lived and labored, that the deep Signifi cance of Mr. Morris's tale, as well as its matchless beauty, may be the more readily appreciated.
