Glasgow Classics Professor Andy Gallagher had always believed that his grandfather John, a Commando, had been killed in Crete during the War. Andy finds himself balancing his career in Classics with being a devoted father to his daughter Eilidh amid a difficult separation. Then Andy's father, Michael, receives a letter out of the blue saying that John had died only a few weeks ago in Crete, leaving a box of important papers for his son to collect. Michael is shattered to learn that his father had been alive for decades after the War, but had never contacted his family. Andy goes to Crete to collect the box and finds that it contains John's wartime journal. The journal not only exposes the ruthless political manoeuvring that shaped the island's wartime fate but also points to a long-buried treasure hidden within the White Mountains, secrets that, even decades later, some are willing to kill to protect.
