Publisher's Synopsis

Observations of the Habits and Haunts of the Fox, Badger, Otter, Seal, Hare, and of Their Pursuers in Cornwall. First published in 1904. Illustrated with photographs throughout. John Coulson Tregarthen (1854-1933) was a British field naturalist and author described as "the best loved Cornishman of his time." He was born in Penzance and educated at Penzance Grammar School, later graduating with Mathematical Honours from London University in 1878. The following year he was appointed Mathematical Master at Trinity College School in Stratford-on-Avon and bought the school a few years later, serving as headmaster from 1885-1900. Whilst resident in the town he became good friends with the author Marie Corelli and in his late forties sold the school to her and retired to Cornwall. Here he was able to pursue his naturalist interests and began to write about the native wildlife, finding a publisher for his work with the help of Corelli.
