Everyone desires to see his prayers answered. Yet not many are successful in the area of prayer. As a result, some believers have adopted attitudes, practices, and actions which they believe will make their prayers more effective. Unfortunately, many of these actions and habits are not spiritually inspired but are products of man's flesh. The upshot is more hindrances to prayer.
Prayer is one of the least taught subjects in our churches today, and yet it should be one of the most important engagements in a believer's life. Prayer is an arduous task that requires great sacrifices. And therefore, great efforts need to be taken to improve one's effectiveness in it.
Many, who come into the faith are required to pray and get results with little or no training at all. While Jesus and John the Baptist taught their disciples how to pray, pastors and teachers have somehow left new believers to adopt a trial-and-error strategy; and to find for themselves what works and what doesn't.
An effective prayer life is not only a confidence booster that inspires one to pray even more, but also encourages others who may not have the inspiration to pray. When people hear the testimonies of those who always labor in prayer, they are inspired and may be prompted to put more effort into seeking the face of the Lord. Just as the Moravians inspired John Wesley through their dedication to prayer and unmovable faith, so will many be inspired to fulfill their destinies through diligence in prayer when they see others succeeding.
For anyone to grow in his prayer life, he should not only understand the principles of prayer but also know what hinders prayers and how to avoid them. The level of ignorance among believers about prayer is unbelievable. Some of the attitudes and habits that many have learned from their mentors and have adopted to boost their prayers, are in themselves the greatest hindrances to their prayers.
The purpose of this book is to help you grow in your prayer life. It is more of a "how-not-to" than a "how-to" of prayer. In other words, it is intended to help you disengage from actions, attitudes, and habits which may sometimes seem harmless, but are great inhibitors of prayer.
What many believers need is to first unlearn the wrong things that they have learned, before they can learn the right things that will help enrich their prayers. Learning the secrets of prayer without discarding old destructive habits is defeatist.
