In a time of releigious, social and political upheaval, two isolated culteures clash with devasting results. Kiya, a healer, is kidnapped to fulfil an ancient prophecy and taken north across the High Atlas Mountains to a brutal, pagan high-priest. Raphel, her storyteller husband, sets out on a thousand-mile journey to bring her home armed only with hope and a headful of stories. In doing so, he uncovers a formidable truth. They look to Abe, an itinerent peddler, for aid but he has his own secret agenda decreed by a long-dead pope. Help comes from where they least expect, but who can they trust - friend or foe?
