Publisher's Synopsis
A collection of thought pieces inspired by Marvin Gaye's 1971 "What's Going On?" album. The title "Where Are We Going?" is from a song on Marvin Gaye's "You're The Man" album that was recorded in 1972 as a follow up to "What's Going On?" but wasn't released until 2019. In 1967, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's last book was titled, "Where do we go from here: Chaos or Community?" In 1971, Marvin Gaye asked, "What's Going On?" In 2021 as I reflect on the 50th anniversary of "What's Going On?" and looking at the current climate of our nation, I am led to title this work, "Where Are We Going?" In Dr. King's title, the question gives two destinations to decide between. Marvin Gaye asked, what's going on, which is asked in the present tense even though the answer has futuristic implications. The question, where are we going, requires a reflection of where we are currently, where we desire to go and how will we get to where we've decided to go. This question opens the door to look at yesterday, today and tomorrow in a way that allows us to aspire for more than we see without overlooking the realities of what we are seeing.
