As German bombs wreak havoc on West London, Megan Stubbs' father, Dai Morgan, is killed in an air raid. Coping with her loss, Megan takes over her father's milk round, and she and her mother, Dolly, brave the ravaged streets with the horse and cart. Comforted that her twin girls have been safely evacuated to Wales with her sister Hetty, Megan worries about her husband, Will, fighting abroad. And when Will's life-long friend, Doug Reynolds, returns, wounded and disfigured, she takes him in. However, Doug is not the man she thinks he is... When peace is declared in 1945 the boys come home.
