Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from When Life Was New
When we were boys we used to find no season of the year so trying as the weeks in which the field or lawn before the house was sacredly kept for mowing grass. We could see the finches ?y down into it from one or other of the three great elm-trees which stood so proudly and threw over it such immense shadows. The finches would hover awhile, picking the seeds of the taller grass, then plump down, invisible, unap proachable.
