Kiara Rhodes, a University of Hawai'i freshman transfer, constantly battles with suicidal thoughts. Soon after her arrival at her new school, Kiara learns about Emma Lawson: her twin sister whom she had no prior knowledge of and had died by suicide the previous semester. In Kiara's journey, professors and students who knew Emma watch Kiara as if she is a ghost. Slowly, Kiara begins to piece together the puzzling story of a girl identical, yet completely different to herself and begins to realize the choices life holds. Through heartbreak and revelation, Kiara learns to let go of things she can't control and to reach out for the things she can. Because of her sister, she finds herself given a second chance at life; she is living a life at UH treated as if she had returned from the dead. What I Chose is a story that will hopefully illuminate the meaning in finding purpose, hope, and embracing the choices we are given in this life. (Proceeds from this book will be donated.)
