Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Wellington's Operations in the Peninsula (1808-1814), Vol. 2 of 2

It is vain to h0pe for any assistance from the Spaniards: the first thing they will require uniformly will be money; then arms, ammunition, clothing of all descriptions, provisions, forage, horses, means of trans port, and everything which the expedition would have a right to require from them and after all, this extraordinary and perverse people will scarcely allow the commander of the expedition to have a voice in the plan of operations to be followed when the whole shall be ready to undertake any, if indeed they ever should be ready. In point of fact the question settled itself, for Santona was shortly afterwards seized by the French and remained in their hands until the end of the war.
