Stephane Mallarme hat als Dichter, Ubersetzer und Visionar der Avantgarden neben enigmatischen Versgedichten und poetologischen Prosatexten auch eine Fulle von Papierarbeiten hinterlassen, die hier in den Rahmen seines grossen Projekts der Vers de circonstance/Verse unter Umstanden gestellt werden. Diese Gedichte zu besonderen Anlassen oder geselligen Ereignissen sind grosstenteils auf ungewohnliche Materialien oder Dinge geschrieben - darunter Briefumschlage, Visitenkarten, Photographien, Papierfacher, CalvadosKruge und flache Kieselsteine. Allein die Zusammenstellung zur Buchausgabe von 1920 enthalt fast 500 durchweg adressierte Gedichte, die meist scherzhaft-galant Komplimente formulieren, auf Eigenheiten der namentlich genannten Adressierten anspielen und die besonderen Gelegenheiten, zu denen sie verfasst wurden, poetisch reflektieren. In Mallarmes Schreiben von 1884 bis zu seinem fruhen Tod 1898 sind es besonders die Verse fur Mery Laurent, in denen samtliche Formen und Formate dieser poetischen Arbeit mit Dingen des taglichen Lebens, modischen Accessoires und Gaben unzahlige Male variiert werden. Die je einzigartige Verbindung von Ding, Schriftgebilde und Vers macht auf die besondere Materialitat dieser seriell hergestellten poetischen Artefakte aufmerksam. Sie werden hier als Bastelarbeiten und Farbenkunst mit Blick auf ihre Aneignung geselliger Praktiken, Rituale und Zirkulationsformen betrachtet und in der Variation japanischer Bildelemente als west-ostliches Projekt im Zeichen von Mehrsprachigkeit und Hybridisierung untersucht. Mallarmes Zeichnungen fur Mery Laurent, in denen die umworbene Adressatin als Pfau und Fachertier figuriert ist, stehen so fur diese uneinholbar dichte Symbolsprache, die hochste Abstraktion und dingliche Konkretion untrennbar verbindet.
