In the middle of the night, twelve-year-old Latesha Washington awoke and looked out her window and saw hundreds of bats crashing into each other and falling to the earth. On the ground a huge black box- like thing, fuzzy around the edges, sat immobile. Some bats smashed into the side of the box and others flew right through. The next morning, the box was still there. The day was sunny, but the box made no shadow. Then the ground started to shake, and the weather began to change . . .
