The novel, following publication in France the year before, had been awarded the Prix Goncourt; it is based on the author's own experiences as a prisoner of the German troops and depicts 'the nightmare existence of human beings in the storms of modern war' (blurb). The dustjacket is one of few examples in this medium by Bradford artist Frank Bateson Mason, who attended the Royal College of Art and who belongs with the Neo-Romantic work of better known artists such as Keith Vaughan and John Minton.
