Hicks, Palmer and related families from the villages of Northlew, Ashbury, Inwardleigh, Hatherleigh and Germansweek in Devon, England left for North America in the 19th century. The narrative describes the history of the family from the 17th century to the early 20th century. A genealogy in the second half of the book provides details on family members from the 17th century to the present. The family settled primarily in Chicago, and Black Hawk County, Iowa, with branches spreading to Minnesota, North Dakota and Nebraska. Included is information on the Palmer family of Temuka, New Zealand and Hicks and Palmer family in Australia. Other surnames from early Devon include Weekes, Weeks, Tucker, Southcombe, Honeychurch, Northcott, Squire, Eastcott, Seccombe, Voaden, Ryall and Martyn.
