Publisher's Synopsis

This book is a historical account of life in Mississippi just one generation removed from slavery. As revealed by the life the author's family, the end of slavery as a state law did not necessary mean the end of slavery for the children whose parents were themselves the children of ex-slaves. Many suffered and weathered all sorts of conditions in the home as well as in the school system just to survive on a daily basis. It is also one woman's courage to survive during these times as many poor blacks had to farm for a living. The only way for most of them was cotton picking or cotton farming because cotton was the main crop. They worked very hard picking cotton from sun up until sun down with very little to eat and only to return home to another system of child slavery. This book is an encouragement for anyone going through hardship and physical abuse.
