Publisher's Synopsis

Waste minimization is an important element of sustainable development. It is concerned with environmental protection and with the reduction of production costs by the reduction of waste at source and by recycling. This guide provides an introduction to the many practical techniques which can be implemented to minimize waste, ranging from simple good housekeeping practice to sophisticated computational and life cycle methods. The book also provides a widely-accepted methodology which can be followed to ensure that waste minimization programmes and projects are successfully implemented.;This guide is aimed at process engineers and managers. Based on the US Environmental Protection Agency's "Waste Minimization Opportunity Assessment Manual" and the UK DTI booklet "Cutting Your Losses", a draft version was circulated to the industry in 1993. This published form is adjusted to take account of criticism of the draft. It provides case studies. The focus of the book is process and related activities, but the methodology is applicable right across industry.
