Publisher's Synopsis
Agro-industries play a major role in the world's economy and at the same time are major contributors to the worldwide industrial pollution problem. With the tremendous pace of technological development substantial research is devoted to coping with wastes of ever increasing complexity generated by agro-industries. This symposium was a pioneering effort to provide a dynamic and comprehensive approach to appropriate waste management and encourage further efforts. Subjects discussed covered a significant group of industrial activities based on agricultural means or products, such as textile, pulp and paper, leather, food, sugar, edible oil, beverage and animal farming. Major issues addressed include waste characterization and categorization, problems of effluent quality management, control and treatment technologies, pretreatment, problems in hot and cold climates, energy recovery and reuse systems and sludge utilization and disposal.
