Publisher's Synopsis

This book follows the story of "Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler" - the most powerful and ruthless force within the SS. They were Hitler's private bodyguard regiment and became the elite of the SS. At the end of World War II there were only 30 men left, from an original force of 30,000. They called themselves the "old hares", and they left a trail of terror as they butchered their way across Europe.;The beginning of their end came in July 1944, when Hitler ordered them to Normandy and hopeless objectives. Their last battle in the West - the Battle of the Bulge - ended in a freezing withdrawal. A surprise attack from the Russians in Hungary sent them back in a humiliating retreat which led ultimately to Hitler's bunker and afterwards, the war crimes trial in Dachau.
