Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from War and the Family

The list of battle-deaths is, however, only a part of the story, not more than half of it, for a certainty. Any major war is likely to cause as many deaths among civilians as among soldiers. Every great war produces its epidemics. Typhus fever, bubonic plague, cholera, typhoid fever, dysentery, small-pox, and scurvy are known as war epidemics. Venereal disease, though not epidemic, has had a long military record, and tuberculosis always gains as a result of war-time living conditions.
