School reading specialist Nicole Adams has always lived life a little to the left. Resisting conformity, the current school year promises new challenges for her as Nicole begins to work with a new group of eighth graders. She builds a relationship with one eighth grader, in particular - Brandon Martinez. Brandon is a two year veteran in one of the most dangerous gangs in the world and has already begun climbing the ranks. When Nicole befriends Brandon she sees through his rough facade and looks at him as a person rather than a gang banger. She walks the line between personal and professional as she and he build a bond that makes them family. Just as things begin to change for him, Brandon's brother rats him out to the gang leaders, and his choice to turn himself around ends up being one that could get them both hurt - or even killed.
