This book grew out of a challenge that presented itself when I wanted to turn a hike in Portland's Hoyt Arboretum into an "Airbnb Experience." I was intrigued when I first heard about the concept, and immediately seized on the idea of offering a guided visit through the lovely park that sits less than half a mile from my front door.But I stopped short when I saw that in order to qualify as something that Airbnb would offer, the experience would need to be a "life-changing" event. I've lived within a half-mile of the arboretum for more than twenty years. I've used the park's beautiful trails like an extended backyard and always appreciated my good fortune. But like many locals, I had never taken much time to look beneath the surface. When I did, I was frankly astonished by what I found. The book is intended to walk you through the park along the trails that I have walked with hundreds of visitors over many years. It also serves as the script for the audiobook version, which I have personally recorded.Seeing the arboretum's magic through the eyes of hundreds of first-time visitors has given me a singular perspective on this crown jewel among Portland's many parks.
