In 1812 Fort Madison was a frontier fort on the banks of the Mississippi River. Black Hawk and his warriors are determined to destroy the Fort and drive the soldiers from their territory. A small group of soldiers from St Louis arrive to reinforce the fort. With them their wives and children not truly knowing the dangers that lay ahead. Anne Spencer enters Fort Madison with her Step-mother Maude and Father Private Horace Spencer. At an early age Anne was raised in the mission field with many Indian friends. Despite the tragedy of loosing her love ones to the hands of a waring Indian tribe Anne has not remained bitter. Her fond memories of dearest childhood friends, and steadfast love of God has kept her heart tender. She befriends Mocking Bird an outcast at the fort, and her brother Daniel the Fort Scout. Angering her Father, who seeks only revenge against all Indians. Anne is one if the few eligible females at the Fort. She has caught the the eye of many a soldier. Anne becomes ever more dependent on listening to God before entangling her emotions as tragedy strikes over and over again. Will her eventual choice destroy what is left of her relationship with her Father.The threat of war and siege define their daily lives. Then Indians capture some of the residents of the Fort. Under siege they are unable to go after them and Horace's hate makes Anne fear she will never see healing for her Father's embittered heart. Will they escape the Fort before all is lost? Can God use tragedy for good? Will Anne be brave enough to acknowledge her love for the Christian man God has for her?Based on the historical events around Fort Madison fact and fiction intertwine to create a story that speaks to the soul.
