Publisher's Synopsis
Text in German. Creative artists and journalists look at "their Burgenland", to which they feel connected: Lovingly and critically, alternating between closeness and distance. Their essays take on the land of emigrants, commuters, second home owners and newcomers from different perspectives. That For a long time Burgenland was a land of "walking". Economic hardship caused people to emigrate or to look for work as commuters. With accession to the EU at the latest, living conditions improved significantly. Today going and coming are in balance. The 100th birthday of the youngest Austrian federal state is an occasion to take stock. Around 20 authors, born or immigrated there, living, working or spending free time in Burgenland, develop a picture of the social and cultural change in the country and its identity in mostly essayistic contributions. The old, new and part-time Burgenlanders touch on a number of essential questions: Is there a Burgenland consciousness or even a collective inferiority complex? Was the EU funding just a blessing or also a curse? Is the coexistence of the ethnic groups really harmonious? What traces did the centuries of belonging to Hungary leave?
