Publisher's Synopsis
"Vogel's Textbook of Practical Organic Chemistry" has become a standard text in the organic chemistry laboratory. It meets the needs of chemistry students throughout their training and serves as a useful reference work for practising organic chemists. Substantial changes have been made to the book for this fifth edition. The first chapter on organic synthesis discusses the structural and stereo-isometric features of molecules, the importance of control, selectivity and protection in organic reaction sequences, and the increasing importance of asymmetric synthesis.;The first three sections of Chapter 2 deal with general instructions for safe working, planning of experiments and hazards in organic chemistry laboratories. The rest of the chapter discusses apparatus and reaction procedures. Spectroscopic methods and the interpretation of spectra are now treated together in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 on solvents and reagents has been extended to include important new reagents, including alkyllithiums, boranes, and new oxidants and reductants. Approximately 100 new experiments have been introduced into the following four preparative chapters. Chapter 9 deals with the investigation and characterization of organic compounds, and the last chapter contains tables of physical constants. The appendices have been updated.
