The substance of the meteorological observations referred to in Col. Long's Expeditions, and also the observations of Mr. Haines, are embodied in Chap ter X. I always regard with peculiar respect the evidence of an actual observer, experienced on the subject which his testimony is requisite tl support; and, therefore, consider the evidence of Col. Long, in the case of the climate of the United, States, as going far towards a decision of the controversy.
