In January, 1933, workers who were part of the CNT (National Work Confederation) marched in the streets, demonstrating and believing that they were starting a revolution. Somehow during the demonstrations, two guards were wounded. The government's attempt to stamp out such revolutionary zeal came to a tragic head and twenty-four people died during the incident. The violence at Casas Viejas contributed to the uprising three years later that became the Spanish Civil War.
