Anastasios Tumpanakis, a Ph.D. in Medical Psychology at the School of Medical Sciences at the University of London, and his colleagues conducted a systematic analysis of 11 studies on the effects of vegetarianism and veganism on patients with type 2 diabetes.
The publication of the findings was released on 31 October 2018 at the BMJ Open Diabetes Research & Care. Scientists have confirmed that patients' cholesterol and triglyceride levels have decreased. Researchers also noted improvements in the overall physical and emotional condition of the subjects, stabilization of HbA1c (glycated hemoglobin) levels, and a decrease in the signs of depression and cardiovascular disease risk - Library Journal.
Dr. Jeffrey Soble, Professor of Cardiology at the Medical Center of the University of Rush in Chicago, also does not eat meat. He noted that Dr. Tumpanakis' research confirms the benefits of a plant-based diet not only for type 2 diabetics but also for anyone else. According to him, most modern diets are based on the principles of low calorie, high protein content, and high-fat content - their positive effects, in the long term, have not been proven.
Compared to them, a plant-based diet has metabolic advantages, reduces the risks of obesity and certain cancers, and prolongs life.
