Vascular factors - including cerebral abnormalities, cardiovascular pathophysiology, and genetic influences - are rapidly gaining importance in the cause and progression of Alzheimer's disease, cerebral amyloid angiopathy, and other vascular dementias. This text, taken from a conference, addresses several important epidemiologic, pathologic, and clinical issues in establishing the role of vascular pathogensis of these debilitating disorders, including a review of collinergic and other molecular mechanisms, white matter lesioins, the roles of apolipoprotein E, and genetics.
