The title of the book comes from the allegorical story of John Bunyan The Pilgrim's Progress, first published in 1678 and still widely read at the time of Thackeray's novel. The vanity fair refers to a stop in the pilgrim's progress: an endless fair in a city called Vanity, which was intended to represent the sinful attraction of man for worldly things.The novel is currently considered a classic, and has inspired several film adaptations, the most recent being the 2004 film starring Reese Witherspoon.The story begins with Miss Pinkerton Academy for Young Ladies, where Becky Sharp and Amelia Sedley have just finished their studies and are preparing to go to Amelia's house in Russell Square.
