This proceedings, ""Urban Public Transportation Systems: Ensuring Sustainability Through Mass Transit"", contains 46 papers from 12 countries, covering sustainable development, defined here as development that allows people ""to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs"" (Brundtland Commission, 1987). The international conference was the second of a series dealing with urban public transportation system topics. Clear understanding of the complex array of necessary policies, techniques, and technologies involved in coordinated and enlightened mass transportation development is vital toward ensuring that a sustainable environment exists for generations to come. The papers generally consisted of three topics: socioeconomic characteristics, land use, and travel patterns of the city; the existing urban transportation system and its operations in the city and use by the people; and issues of sustainability related to the city's public transit system.
