The garden planting was principally designed by Kitty Lloyd-Jones with Lady Bearsted in the 1930s. The sweeping lawn gives way to a dramatic series of terraces and herbaceous borders, which descend to a kitchen garden and tranquil water garden. Upton is also home to the National Collection of Asters.
