Publisher's Synopsis
Bhinneka Tungga Eka, translated as "Unity and Diversity", is Indonesia's national motto. It reflects the extraordinary regional diversity of the country, economic, ecological, demographic, social, and linguistic, alongside the objective of national economic and political integration. Extending 5000 km from East to West, modern Indonesia is a nation of extremes, from the modern technology of Jakarta's industrial and commercial complex and the resource-rich enclaves scattered throughout the Outer Islands, to the isolated regions of Eastern Indonesia and densely settled rice cultivation areas of Java.;This work, co-authored by a group of Australian and Indonesian scholars, provides a comprehensive examination of regional economic development in Indonesia. Each survey sketches the regional economy and highlights major development issues and constraints. Taken together, the surveys point to both the similarities and the difference in regional development.
