Publisher's Synopsis
These volumes brings together the most significant journal articles to appear on United Kingdom government and politics over the past 30 years. The articles are critical and interpretative. They are of high quality in that they are often cited. Finally, they adopt an institutional approach because institutions figure prominently in the conventional Westminster model of British government and the volumes seek to prompt a critical debate about that model. The aim is to make an extensive range of essays readily accessible to teachers, researchers and students; and to introduce them to both established and new interpretations. Volume 1. has an extended introduction by the editor and seven sections on: approaches; historical context; power and the state; the constitution; elections and parties; pressure groups; and parliament. Volume 2. has ten sections: executive ? prime minister; executive ? cabinet; executive ? ministers; civil service; policy; management; local government; quangos; the secret state and new directions. - -
