Publisher's Synopsis

In the spring of 1968, Tom Williams, a young reporter for a Tampa newspaper, lands the assignment that will make his career. He travels to Atlanta to cover the funeral of Dr. Martin Luther King. On his return he stops off in his hometown of Monrovia, Florida to visit his ailing grandmother, who raised him following the mysterious deaths of his parents.

This seemingly chance decision brings Williams face to face with a past that he has tried to overcome, the murder of the first woman he ever loved and the subsequent lynching of his best friend.

Tom's renewed efforts to determine who is behind these murders brings him into conflict with an assortment of organized crime figures and corrupt local officials intent on stopping him by any means necessary. Not knowing whom he can trust, he soon discovers secrets about his community and neighbors that he would rather not have known.
