Publisher's Synopsis
The 1984 Yearbook is divided into three sections, all of which will be of interest to peace researchers. The first section deals with questions of race and ethnicity, a particularly timely subject since racism and ethnic discrimination have been and remain a major source of conflict. The articles in Approaches to Race and Ethnicity provide readers with an overview of recent research and the theories which dominate that research. The second section, Approaches to Peace, deals with disarmament. Here Johan Galtung goes beyond his former theories to discuss differing scenarios for disarmament. Yet another section deals with settlement procedures and multilateral negotiations. The case study of Latin America is particularly informative because of the boundary disputes that exist between a number of states. This section also contains a useful annotated bibliography of multilateral negotiations and the role of third parties. The volume concludes with a section of reports of Unesco meetings and institutional developments concerning peace research.
