Publisher's Synopsis
Industrial designers are working on projects for a variety of organizations, from government entities to private enterprises. Industrial designers are not just designing commercial products, but designing user experiences, processes, and systems by applying the creative approach of what has been come to be known as "design thinking." The idea to utilize the design process as a way to analyze and innovate has been widely embraced-from business schools to major consulting practices- and has changed the landscape of how industrial designers work. These ideas illustrate the wide variety of User eXperiences (UX) and reveal the rich and complex reality that goes far beyond the strict functional aspect of a system. They are not only about interacting with a system, but also about doing things that make sense in our life, that bring pleasure and satisfaction and relate to our emotions, interests, motivations, values, lifestyle, in short, all that make us human. This volume covers state of the art theoretical descriptions of UX as well as methods for measuring it. This analytical view is widely covered, even though on a rather abstract level. This volume discloses prospective designer techniques and methods of a new age of industrial design, whose practitioners strive to paradigm simple and yet complex products of the future. The novel frontiers of a new era of industrial design are uncovered, in what concerns the design process, in illustrating the use of new technologies in design and in terms of the advancement of culturally inspired design. The idea of User Experience (UX) is to achieve a positive emotional reaction of users on a product interaction and thereby to create a unique selling proposition. Inappropriately, people's needs, perception and resulting emotions are subjective and thereby very diverse. Additionally, UX is highly dependent on the physical and social context. This volume covers Experience Interaction Model (UXIM) which consists of UX-relevant elements from the disciplines industrial design, human factors and psychology to handle this complexity. Based on UXIM, concrete principles derived from examples of successful experiences to support UX design are also proposed. This volume assists readers in leaping forward in their own practice and in preparing new design research that is relevant and aligned with the current challenges of this fascinating field.
