Publisher's Synopsis
This text presents the fundamental principles of chemistry to first year life science undergraduates and diploma students whose chemical education has been considerably less than perfect. From the opening pages chemical concepts are presented with reference to their biological importance and biological applications are frequently and consistently presented. No previous knowledge of chemistry is assumed.;The authors adopt a problem-solving approach to learning in the belief that such an approach gives students a more durable understanding of biochemistry. The text is punctuated at frequent intervals with questions which require solutions from the reader before he/she can proceed. Full and helpful answers are given to every problem. In addition, each chapter ends with a "serial" problem which seeks to bring together all the concepts covered in the chapter. Again, full answers are given.;The book is based on the authors' experiences over a number of years teaching first year students at Napier University, and has been thoroughly class tested.;This book should be of interest to junior undergraduates in life science, pharmacy, medicine, veterinary science, dentistry, agriculture.
