In many churches gravestones stand and lie, epitaphs stand or hang on the walls. The church visitor often walks past them. When he looks at them, the inscriptions are difficult for him to decipher, emblems and iconographies are incomprehensible and the contents of the coats of arms are mysterious and remain a riddle. In the present volume tombstones and epitaphs of the Martin Luther Church Markkleeberg (formerly Gautzsch) are recorded as holistically as possible: Monument owners, materiality, condition, inscriptions are recorded and evaluated, heraldic signs described and genealogically analyzed.
