In 1957, Gilbert John was born to the Navajo People in Gallup, New Mexico. His childhood was compelling enough. His family struggled to scratch a living out of the arid land while Gilbert struggled to find his own identity somewhere between the ancient traditions of his grandfather and the unfamiliar and overbearing standards of his white schoolteachers. But a tragic accident at the age of 17 left Gilbert a quadriplegic and changed the tenor of his life forever.
