Writer Janet Allbritton is in town visiting her mother when she witnesses the preacher's death in the church fellowship hall. Janet is at a crossroads in her life and career and has left her home in a suburb of Washington, D.C., to give herself physical and psychological distance in her quest. She teams with writer Jefferson Rife, editor of the local newspaper, to explore the history of the region and publish articles in a column titled Local Legends. Together, Janet and Jeff investigate the preacher's life and death, and uncover his and other's secrets in a compelling search for truth.
