It might perhaps have seemed unnecessary to reprint the First Paper, inasmuch as' it had already been published in a Journal so generally accessible as The Classical Review. As, however, it appeared that greater convenience of reference would be secured, if the Second Paper (now for the first time printed at length) were immediately preceded by a reprint of the earlier Paper, the writer is much indebted to both the Editor and the Publisher of The Classical Review for their kindness in enabling him to carry into effect the plan which thus so forcibly commended itself.
