Publisher's Synopsis
When for no apparent reason a dull mid-level city employee is found brutally murdered in his home, the fingers of suspicion point to his young widow, beneficiary of a recently acquired two million dollar life insurance policy. Normally specializing in insurance fraud, private eye AJ Hackett finds himself on the other side of the fence when hired by the widow's lawyer to clear her name. Establishing the widow's innocence is one thing, but tracking down the killer puts Hackett on a slippery slope leading to a labyrinth of shady government kickbacks, drug smugglers, and twisted hedonistic deviants, some of whose attempts to put an end to his life are as earnest as his attempts to bring them to justice. To survive Hackett must call in markers from friends both in and outside the law. Throughout, he maintains his sanity with a sharp and biting sense of humor, a weary eye over his shoulder, and a hand firmly planted on his trusty gun-because his path takes him to an environment where everyone has a gun.
