States census of 1840 records that coal was mined in 19 counties of Illinois; the product was bushels tons) and 152 men were employed in the industry. From 1840 to 1860, a period of twenty years, we are without any general or special data of coal mining in the State; however, some scattering statistics are to be found in the geological reports of the State.
