Publisher's Synopsis

Spanish America has produced some of the finest poets of the twentieth century, admired by English-speakers and Spanish-speakers alike. Twentieth-Century Poetry from Spanish America provides access to 12,000 poems from 72 separate anthologies in three distinct indexes, making access to the verse-writing of Spanish American writers easy. The first index provides each author's complete name and a list of his or her anthologized poems, as well as place of origin, dates, and real name (if appropriate). A title index provides the title of the anthologized poems, the author's last name, and a code that identifies the anthology in which the whole text appears. The first line index includes the first line, the author, and title. In the third index, one can find the poem even when neither author nor title is known. The scope of the poetry included spans from teh Modernismo school to the present, and all the anthologies have been published since 1950. Many of the anthologies represent a focused subject, such as poetry from a specific country, poetry by women, poetry of protest, or by African-Latin Americans. All the poems are written in Spanish though many have facing English translations in the anthology. Twentieth-Century Poetry from Spanish America doesn't just furnish the most popular verse from notable writers, but an entire range of lesser known and younger poets who might be more difficult to find outside of anthologies.
