Solomon Northup was an American abolitionist who was born a free man in New York. Northup was a professional violinist and was offered a job as a traveling musician and ended up being kidnapped and sold into slavery. Northup was a slave for twelve years before he regained his freedom. Twelve Years a Slave is Northup's famous memoir of his experiences. The book was made into a popular movie which won multiple Oscars in 2014, including best motion picture of the year.
