Publisher's Synopsis

Since 1962, the British journal "Scandinavica" has published a wealth of articles on Nordic literature and culture. To commemorate the centenary of the death of the Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen (1828-1906), a selection of the finest articles published in "Scandinavica" on the subject of Ibsen's work will be published in 2005. The selection has been made to reflect the breadth and variety of scholarship into Ibsen's plays during the past four decades. The articles cover a wide range of general topics, from his reception in England and an analysis of early performances of the plays in London to studies of his language and style, as well as individual essays on specific plays. These include "Love's Comedy", "Ghosts", "An Enemy of the People", "Rosmersholm", "The Lady from the Sea", "The Master Builder", and "When We Dead Awaken". Contributors include James McFarlane, James Northam, Kristian Smidt, Brian Johnson, Egil Tornqvist and Erik Osterud.
